When a same-sex couple is joined together in a civil union, they are given many of the same legal protections and responsibilities that are found in a marriage. Just like marriages can end in a divorce, couples of the same-sex that had entered into a civil union may be able to legally separate in what is called a civil union dissolution.
In Illinois, as of June 1, 2014, same-sex marriages are recognized. The Civil Union Act, which was previously in place, is still in effect which allows for two adults of either the same sex or opposite sex to enter into a Civil Union. This newest act also allows for a civil union to be converted into a marriage if certain steps are taken.
